67th Annual Maine Lobster Festival - July 30th - August 3rd, 2014 Harbor Park in Rockland, Maine
The first week of August is a very busy time for the seaside town of Rockland, Maine. Each year, the Rockland community hosts their internationally recognized Maine Lobster Festival, attracting visitors from around the world to eat succulent Maine lobster right on the coast of Maine.
It’s a five-day event in a small coastal town with plenty to offer visitors. In addition to enjoying delicious seafood, visitors can truly make a vacation out of their trip to the Festival by riding carnival rides, exploring touch tanks, and learning about marine life.
However, there are five important events that take place during the Maine Lobster Festival that you will not want to miss:
1) The crowning of the 2014 Maine Sea Goddess
Each year, the Maine Lobster Festival hosts the Maine Sea Goddess Coronation on the first night of the Festival. Young ladies from the local community compete for the coveted Maine Sea Goddess crown, representing the state of Maine and the lobster industry at other events throughout New England during their reigning year. The Coronation is one of the biggest events of the entire Festival, and it is certainly one of the most popular.
2) The Seafood Cooking Contest
Amateur chefs ages 18 and older are welcome to apply for a spot in the annual Seafood Cooking Contest at the Maine Lobster Festival. A panel selects five contestants and their genuine recipes to participate. The panel selects contestants based on creativity, suitability of the seafood to the recipe, and simplicity. Recipes can be any type of dish and must include seafood found in Maine waters. The contest begins at 9 a.m. on Friday, August 1, 2014 on the Festival grounds in the North Entertainment tent.
3) Main Stage Entertainment!
The 67th annual Maine Lobster Festival welcomes both local and internationally recognized musicians to perform on the Main Stage at the Festival. In the past, the Festival has hosted performers like .38 Special, The Spin Doctors, Uncle Kracker, and David Cassidy. This year, the Festival will welcome Daryle Singletary and Confederate Railroad to headline the Friday night show, and rock legends Johnny Winter, Edgar Winter, Vanilla Fudge, Pete Rivera, and Kim Simmons to headline Saturday night’s show. The Main Stage will also feature Maine-based groups like the Mallett Brothers Band, Amy Allen, and the Veayo Twins during Festival week.
4) A Big Parade!
Saturday morning during Festival week features The Big Parade. The procession is made up of participants from the local community, who all design their floats based on the Festival theme. This year, the Maine Lobster Festival’s theme is “Lobster Livin’: Families Behind the Industry” to honor all of the local lobstermen and their families. Join locals and visitors alike on Rockland Main Street to see parade participants express their creativity.
5) The Great International Lobster Crate Race
Sunday, the last day of the Maine Lobster Festival, is also Family Fun Day for all Festival goers. General admission to the Festival is free on this final day, and features a number of fun events for children. One of the most popular events on Family Fun Day is the Great International Lobster Crate Race. Participants in this event face a major challenge: Run across a string of wooden lobster crates, or else take a swim in the chilly waters of Rockland Harbor.
While lobster continues to be the primary focus in Rockland during the first week of August, there is also plenty to do with the family at the 67th Annual Maine Lobster Festival. Don’t miss the “fun and feasting on the fabulous coast of Maine” during your summer trip!
